Bulgaria: Afghanistan’s first female pilot hopes for career take-off in Bulgaria after fleeing Taliban

Afghanistan's first female pilot now trying to restart her career in Bulgaria, as seen in Sofia on Thursday, after having to flee her country when the Taliban seized power. As planes take off and land at Sofia Airport, 23-year-old Mohadese Mirzaee shared the difficulties she has faced in pursuing her passion. “I mean there is no way I cannot do it, why not? and they laughed at me, they made jokes of course, and they told me that I am small for flying such a big Jet, you need some muscles to bring that plane up, I don't believe them,” she said. To achieve her dreams, Mohadese decided to finish high school in Canada, and there, with the help of friends, she took courses, received a certificate, and eventually became a pilot in Afghanistan months before the Taliban took Kabul. The first plane she flew in her life was a Cessna 152, then a Cessna 172, then a Seneca plane, and finally a Boeing 737 in the air with more than 140 passengers on board. She flew for a year, putting in approximately 1,000 hours. After the fall of Kabul, Mohadese was able to take a plane to Ukraine and then to Bulgaria. Her family, her mother, and two sisters managed to leave Afghanistan shortly after and are now in a refugee centre in Albania. According to 'Mo', as her friends call her, several girls started learning to become pilots, but with the new regime in Afghanistan, they are less likely to succeed. Mirzaee is now waiting for refugee status in Sofia. She has faith that the Bulgarian authorities will resolve her situation soon and, with the help of an airline, she will be able to fulfil her dream to fly again. “Flying is a kind of freedom you have, once you’re up there flying an airplane, I look down, you don’t see the world’s problems, you don’t see any discrimination you don’t see man, women, you don’t see race, any different colors or anything, you don’t see this things, is just the earth, water, land and clouds, that is all you see and it is beautiful, the world it looks beautiful from up there,” she said. | Video Ruptly (…)
